Description

The Petrus estate (which does not have a château) takes its name from the locality on which its land is located. This place is said to have been named after Saint Peter (Petrus in Latin), who is depicted holding the keys to heaven on the label of Petrus wines.

To put the name "Château" in front of the name "Petrus", as is the case with many grands crus, is somewhat inaccurate since there is no château built on the estate. A recently reconstructed winery simply marks the presence of the Petrus cru.

Initially owned by the Arnaud family, the estate was partly purchased in 1925 by Edmonde Loubat, a Libourne hotelier1, and then acquired by her in its entirety in 1945. To compete with the great wines of the Médoc, Mrs Loubat worked to make the most of her terroir. In 1947, she joined forces with Jean-Pierre Moueix, a wine merchant from Libourne. Both of them travelled the world to make their Petrus known: in 1947, Edmonde Loubat presented her bottles to the great English celebrities at the wedding banquet of Elizabeth II2. Jean-Pierre Moueix introduced Petrus to the Kennedy family, who made it their favourite wine.

In 1970, the purchase of 4.5 hectares from the neighbouring GAZIN increased the surface area of Petrus from 7 to 11.5 hectares.

Since 2001, the estate has belonged to his son Jean-François Moueix and Christian Moueix, his other son, will manage it until 2008. The wine is made by the oenologist Jean-Claude Berrouet. The latter handed over his position at the end of 2008 to his son Olivier Berrouet3. The general management is assured by Jean-François Moueix's son, Jean Moueix, since 2014.

In September 2018, Jean-François Moueix's entourage confirmed that 20 per cent of the capital had been sold to an American billionaire of Colombian origin, Alejandro Santo Domingo.
