Description

Situated on the banks of the River Spey, The Macallan was one of the first legal distilleries in Scotland. In 1824, Alexander Reid obtained the distilling licence. When he died in 1847, his son Alexander took over the running of the distillery. After his death in 1858, the distillery was sold to James Shearer Priest and James Davidson, who sold it to James Stuart ten years later. At that time, James Stuart also owned the Glen Spey distillery. In 1882, Roderick Kemp acquired the distillery, marking the start of a period of development that lasted a century.

From 1965 onwards, the number of stills increased significantly: from 6 to 12 in 1965, then to 18 in 1974, and finally to 21 in 1975. In 1996, the distillery was bought by Highland Distillers Ltd, which at the time included Bunnahabhain, Glenrothes and Highland Park among its acquisitions, and was itself acquired by the Edrington Group in 1999. The Macallan has always been a favourite with master blenders, who continue to incorporate it into their blended whiskies. Although it made its debut as a bottled single malt in the 1960s, it was initially restricted to the Speyside region. It was not until 1980 that the decision was taken to market it more widely in the UK.

Tasting

Nose: a voluminous citrus fragrance with hints of orange, coconut and bourbon vanilla. A hint of cereal completes this sophisticated bouquet.

Palate: supple, full-bodied and powerful, with a multi-faceted interplay of aromas on the palate. Reminiscences of dark oak with citrus fruit, delicious pastries and a hint of green tea.
